Invisalign
Firstly, what is Invisalign? A set of custom made clear, removable aligners used to straighten your teeth. These are specially made in a dental laboratory as they are a bespoke fit for your teeth’s structure and shape. Invisalign places responsibility and control into the patient’s hands, as they need to be routinely replaced every 2 weeks in order to yield successful results. Invisalign’s popularity has rapidly grown over the past few years, with many celebrities embracing this method due to its versatility and discreet appearance.
Benefits of Invisalign:
- As Invisalign is a removable treatment, you are still able to enjoy your favourite foods without jeopardising your treatment. Fixed braces can be difficult to clean out as food can become easily lodged amongst the in’s and out’s of your appliance.
- Invisalign is a set of clear aligners, designed to be discreet.
- Invisalign tends to be more comfortable treatment than a fixed appliance.
- As you have a series of aligners you may not need to attend as frequently as a fixed brace, and if you have to delay an appointment new aligners could be posted to you – so this is a great option for someone who has to travel for work or is away at school.
- You can whiten your teeth at the same time (over 18’s only)
Fixed braces
This is the most common type of treatment amongst children and teens but can also be used by adults. They can be metal, cosmetic or fitted behind the teeth for a more discreet option.
Benefits of fixed braces:
- As they are a fixed appliance, they are there 24/7 helping move your teeth as fast as possible
- You don’t have to remember to put them in – so if you will struggle to comply with wearing aligners 22 hours a day this will be more reliable
- If there are finishing adjustments needed it can be done to the wire or brackets whereas alginers may need to be remoulded and remade (which may mean a delay)
- There is an established long track record of their effectiveness for ALL types of orthodontic problems
